Nature Learning Centre at the Botanical Garden Zotlang will provide exciting experience to the students and other visitors in many interesting ways to learn from nature by means of –

  • Trekking
  • Experiencing interplay of nature with organism
  • Visiting orchid house, butterfly garden, bamboo patch, medicinal plant garden, insectivorous plan and cactus exhibits, fern patches and others
  • Experiencing the mesmerizing sounds of nature and its creatures

The Himalayas are sensitive to global climate change and India is one of the countries expected to be significantly  effected  by the climate change. Government of India under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies(NMHS) initiated  programs to manage climate in the Himalayan states of India, Mizoram is one of the 12 states that fall under this zone. In this context a Nature Learning Centre (NLC) has been proposed to be set up in Mizoram

The NLC will focus on various outreach programs to promote awareness on biodiversity conservation and create a cadre of trainers for facilitating participatory conservation of biodiversity and natural resource. It will also facilitate  ex-situ conservation of select species and identify more such sites across the state where people have been practicing ex-situ conservation to maintain their cultural, traditional and religious beliefs for aesthetic values.

OBJECTIVES  

Awareness and Sensitization :

  • Dissemination of knowledge products on biodiversity observation conservation including curriculum development for schools
  • Seminars and workshops, audio-visual demonstrations, field based activities for students
  • Involvement of media in campaign

Promote ex-situ conservation and develop a cadre for conservation  : 

  • Creation of Nature Learning Centre in Botanical Garden with a series of field activities
  • Development of an ex-situ conservation site for sensitive species
  • Mobilizing different nature enthusiasts and stakeholders

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES

  • Workshops and seminars intended reaching out to community members, students, Government departments and other stakeholders for in calculating in their minds importance of biodiversity and the seed for its conservation.
